Small business solution

As a small or medium size business, you may not be looking to invest heavily in your website - fair enough. So who makes your site? In the 'old days' this would probably mean a 'programmer' with no particular design training or often without any aesthetic sensibilities at all it would seem, would end up building your site because designers aren't trained in the art of programming.

I have found a solution to this problem. Squarespace is "a fully hosted, completely managed environment for creating and maintaining a website". From a business point of view, what Squarespace does for me as a designer is it gives me the power to create web sites at a lower cost to the client. It keeps the costs down because you only pay one person - the designer. You got the same deal with programmers - they don't 'need' a designer to be able to create a website. But a designer without coding knowledge couldn't offer the same service at the same cost - until recently.

Squarespace is the perfect example of how a new strand of web based technology have given me as a designer the ability to offer my skills to the smaller business. I now have the option to build a site for my clients and offer the benefit of my design experience without having to employ a more extensive team. Also, with Squarespace you can give the client editorial controls which means they can add content to the site without the expense of a content management system. Good news for everyone (except loan programmers maybe - sorry to them).
